New Job, New Computer, New Podcast Season

Last updated on November 26, 2023

My 2012 MacBook Pro has been having problems for almost a year, but I’ve managed to keep it running as other systems in our house finally failed. I’ve had the case apart a few times, which you can thankfully do with the older MacBook Pro.

The system tends to overheat editing media, including podcast episodes. The SD card slot doesn’t work anymore and the video out / Thunderbolt 2 connector acts up randomly. There have been reboots, shutdowns, and non-starts as well. But, I’ve managed to keep it running and swore I wouldn’t replace the computer until I had a full-time job.

Limping along made the podcast extra effort, as things would crash during the editing process.

Now, the good news: a new MacBook Pro is on the way. Why? Because I need a portable computer for my new full-time job.

Okay, it is not quite official yet, as the contract is “in the mail” somewhere, but I accepted a job over the phone and I’d like to believe the work I’m already doing for the position is not an illusion.

While we were in Monterey at a city park during our California adventure, I received a phone call offering me a position as a full-time writing instructor at a university not far from our house. It’s a one-year, contract, not tenure-track, but it is a full-time post. I accepted, because this will help us finish our house and pay down some debts.

I interviewed for the job while we were at the Disneyland resort. It was an early morning interview and I wasn’t sure things went well. Apparently, the interview went well enough.

And so there is a new job, a new computer, and a new podcast season on the way.

Just need to have that contract in hand…
