Followers of The Autistic Me blog and podcast send along emails and direct social media messages with topic suggestions and questions. Many of these, I have answered in the past. I try to address private questions when asked, as well.<\/p>\n
What questions should I be addressing?\u00a0Which topics are valuable to readers and listeners?<\/strong><\/p>\n As I have stated several times, the questions tend to involve relationships, education, and employment.<\/p>\n Sometimes I might get a question about diet, causes of autism, or sensory challenges.<\/p>\n Relationship questions range from \u201cHow do you make friends?\u201d to \u201cDo you and your wife enjoy sex?\u201d Most of these questions about relationships come from parents. I often suggest that parents ask the autistic person directly and talk. Too often, what the parent wants or fears isn\u2019t even on the mind of the autistic teen or adult.<\/p>\n Education questions tend to focus on supports, from elementary school through graduate degrees. \u201cWhat should the autistic study?\u201d is an oddly common question. Again, why not let the autistic decide, unless something is truly outside that person\u2019s abilities. There are no \u201cautistic\u201d majors in college, regardless of stereotypes.<\/p>\n And employment questions range from \u201cHow can my child find work?\u201d to \u201cShould I disclose I\u2019m autistic or disabled on my application?”<\/p>\n I\u2019ve written about our marriage<\/a> many times on this blog. I\u2019ve done podcasts on choosing to be parents<\/a>.<\/p>\n What else could people want to know?<\/p>\n On education, I\u2019ve written about how difficult graduate school was. It took me several tries to finally complete a master\u2019s degree. The doctorate was a struggle, too. School, the formal institutional processes<\/a>, presents a challenge.<\/p>\n Learning? I love learning. I dislike school.<\/p>\n Our daughters have had IEP (Individualized Education Plan) \u00a0and 504 supports in elementary school. I\u2019ve been on special education committees as a teacher.<\/p>\n Again, what would be interesting for the blog or podcast?<\/p>\n Oh, I hate job hunting. I dislike it and it presents all sorts of social challenges. I\u2019ve blogged about workplaces, too.<\/p>\n I probably am the least qualified to offer career advice to anyone else. I have no career, only jobs.<\/p>\n Still, what is there that I should address on the blog or podcast?<\/p>\n Send your questions and suggestions to me, and I\u2019ll do what I can to address the topics.<\/p>\n A follower did notice that I didn\u2019t address a question on the blog that was asked. Some of the questions, especially the more personal ones, require some consideration. I am unsure what is or isn\u2019t appropriate for the blog or podcast.<\/p>\n Yes, I will do virtual video appearances.
