A\u00a0parent kills their disabled child. The media portrays these murders as\u00a0justifiable and inevitable due to the \u201cburden\u201d of having a disabled person in\u00a0the family. If the parent stands trial, they are given sympathy\u00a0and\u00a0comparatively lighter sentences, if they are sentenced at all. The\u00a0victims are disregarded, blamed for their own murder at the hands of the person\u00a0they should have been able to trust the most, and ultimately forgotten. And\u00a0then the cycle repeats.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n<!-- iframe plugin v.6.0 wordpress.org\/plugins\/iframe\/ -->\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border: none\" src=\"\/\/html5-player.libsyn.com\/embed\/episode\/id\/18077021\/height\/90\/theme\/custom\/thumbnail\/yes\/direction\/backward\/render-playlist\/no\/custom-color\/336699\/\" height=\"90\" width=\"100%\" scrolling=\"no\" 0=\"allowfullscreen\" 1=\"webkitallowfullscreen\" 2=\"mozallowfullscreen\" 3=\"oallowfullscreen\" 4=\"msallowfullscreen\" class=\"iframe-class\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe>\n\n<h3>Statistics: Autistic Victims of Family, Law Enforcement<\/h3>\n<p>Autistics are too often victims of physical violence.\u00a0Filicide, the murder by one&#8217;s parents, is one of the top three causes of death in\u00a0children under five. It is one of the top five overall causes of death among all children and teens. Autistic children are particularly vulnerable, as parents use the \u201ctrauma\u201d of having an autistic child as a legal defense.<\/p>\n<p>Encounters with police can also be dangerous for autistics, especially autistic persons of color.\u00a0Individuals with a mental illness, including autism, are 16 times more\u00a0likely to die during an encounter with police, the highest of any group studied.\u00a0From 2013 through 2015, data show half of the police encounter deaths were\u00a0people with mental illnesses or cognitive differences.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/autismmemorial.wordpress.com\">https:\/\/autismmemorial.wordpress.com<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/disability-memorial.org\">https:\/\/disability-memorial.org<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/autisticadvocacy.org\/melmemorial\/\">https:\/\/autisticadvocacy.org\/melmemorial\/<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/autisticadvocacy.org\/projects\/community\/mourning\/\">https:\/\/autisticadvocacy.org\/projects\/community\/mourning\/<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Guest Notes<\/h3>\n<p>Peter Joseph Gloviczki (Ph.D., University of\u00a0Minnesota, Mass Communication, 2012) examines representation in the digital\u00a0age. He is particularly interested in the ways that memorialization and\u00a0mediated narration either hold space for or obscure voices that are most often\u00a0othered or excluded in mediated discourses. He works as an associate professor\u00a0of communication at Coker University. He also serves as an assistant editor of\u00a0the <em>Journal of Loss and Trauma<\/em> (Taylor &amp; Francis). Gloviczki is active in both the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC) and the Carolinas Communication Association (CCA).
