Our
\nValley Home: Virtual Life in the Valley<\/strong><\/div>\n
 <\/div>\n
Mornings begin with a check of the
\nlocal headlines, a glance at the weather and a skim of Valley-related Facebook
\ngroup updates. The top of my Google News page features “Fresno-Visalia” regional
\nalerts. I try to be an informed, engaged resident of the Central Valley… except
\nfor the minor detail that my wife and I now live 2521 miles away.  <\/span><\/div>\n
 <\/div>\n
We are “virtual” Valley residents,
\nwith friends, family and clients in Tulare County. Thanks to the Internet, cell
\nphones and wireless data plans, we maintain some connections more actively than
\nwe did when living in the Valley. Even our cell phone numbers begin with the
\n559 area code, something that helps us remain connected to the region.  <\/span><\/div>\n
 <\/div>\n
Being virtual residents of the
\nValley has drawbacks. We can read about the Blossom Trail and see the photos,
\nbut that’s not the same as driving through the foothills. We follow Yelp
\nreviews, but nothing is the same as eating at any of the great Central Valley
\nfamily-owned restaurants. It is hard to find great Southwest and Mexican dining
\nin the northern states. The thing we miss most, though, is fresh produce sold
\nat stands throughout Tulare County. Fresh fruits and vegetables are a treasure.<\/div>\n
 <\/div>\n
When my wife and I visit friends and
\nfamily, we try to support local, family-owned businesses. We read reviews and
\nlisten to recommendations.<\/div>\n
 <\/div>\n
Promoting the Valley begins at home.
\nToo many Valley residents forget the great things about living in the region.
\nFrom Bakersfield to Sacramento, there are some wonderful restaurants, great
\nlocal shops, entertainment venues and more. When someone tells me there’s
\n“nothing to do” in the Valley, I offer to help find something interesting.<\/div>\n
 <\/div>\n
I encourage readers of this column
\nto share news, photos and videos from the Valley. Post items to Facebook,
\nTumblr, Flickr, YouTube and other social media. Including city and region names
\nas hashtags helps people find the latest posts. For those of us currently far
\naway from home, the updates help us stay connected. For Valley residents,
\nsharing might remind others of places they should visit, businesses they should
\nsupport and ways to make the Valley a better home.<\/div>\n
 <\/div>\n
Search Facebook for local
\ncommunities, social groups, non-profit organizations and businesses. Join the
\nFacebook groups, like the pages and get involved in strengthening our
\ncommunity.<\/div>\n
 <\/div>\n
For example, consider joining the “Central
\nValley Creatives” group on Facebook, which is open to all artists and
\nsupporters of the arts. Joining one group on Facebook leads to discovering
\nothers. I’ve “liked” Arts Visalia, Three Rivers Arts, The Enchanted Playhouse,
\nThe Visalia Players, and many local artists on Facebook. When there is an event
\nthat might interest my Valley friends, I share it to my personal timeline.<\/div>\n
 <\/div>\n
If you aren’t yet a member of Yelp
\nand FourSquare, join those online communities and start endorsing local
\nbusinesses. I consult Yelp frequently, searching for affordable, good, local
\ndining options when I travel. It seems likely that visitors to the Valley might
\nalso consult Yelp and FourSquare for suggestions.<\/div>\n
 <\/div>\n
Traveling throughout the nation,
\nI’ve come to appreciate that our little hometown is a city. Like many Valley
\nresidents, we tend to think of Los Angeles or San Francisco as “cities” and our
\ncommunities as something different. Then you discover that major cities in most
\nstates are smaller than Fresno.<\/div>\n
 <\/div>\n
But being a tight-knit community is
\nabout more than census data.<\/div>\n
 <\/div>\n
Even in the Virtual Valley, Visalia
\nfeels more like a small town than a city. The Facebook nostalgia groups remind
\nmany of us of the great Valley places and events, whether you still live in the
\nregion or not. Visalia’s Main Street has evolved, like in many other cities,
\nbut it is fun to recall the red slide, shopping at Link’s or Shelling’s, and
\nbuying a copy of MAD<\/i> magazine downtown. Online, those memories exist as shared photographs and scanned newspaper articles.<\/div>\n
 <\/div>\n
Thanks to Facebook, Pinterest,
\nInstagram and Tumblr, we can see what’s happening back home. I’ve taken the
\nGoogle Street View drives along Mooney Blvd. and Main Street in Visalia,
\nnoticing the vacant buildings and empty lots between new strip centers.
\nFamiliar names are gone, while new businesses have arrived. When you live
\nsomewhere, you forget how much it changes from year to year.<\/div>\n
 <\/div>\n
A student asked me why I left
\nCalifornia after he noticed my Facebook banner featuring rows of young orange
\ntrees near Woodlake. He asked to see other photos, because he hadn’t realized that
\nthe Central Valley was breadbasket to the world. Then I showed him photos from
\nthe national parks.<\/div>\n
 <\/div>\n
“I have to go there!”<\/div>\n
 <\/div>\n
It would be wonderful if he did
\nvisit our national parks, stopping to visit our communities. Some of my former
\nstudents have written to me after trips to California. It is a wonderful place,
\nand I do all I can to promote it.  <\/span><\/div>\n
 <\/div>\n
Moving away was not easy. The Valley
\nis home, and always will be.<\/div>\n
 <\/div>\n
While it would be fantastic if you
\ncould pursue any dream in any location, the reality remains that some career
\npaths run through a handful of places. As a colleague tells her students, you
\ncan’t be on Broadway if you’re not in New York. I’m not living in New York
\nCity, but my career goals and creative interests have led me to one of the best
\nuniversities in the world, in a city with 37 active theater companies. As a
\nplaywright, there’s an undeniable benefit to having the support of such an
\nactive stage community.<\/div>\n
 <\/div>\n
Because Visalians supported
\ncommunity theater, I was encouraged to pursue this dream. Our high schools, the
\nCollege of the Sequoias and community groups introduced me to live theater.
\nThat is why I am dedicated to promoting local artists and organizations.<\/div>\n
 <\/div>\n
As I told the student impressed by
\norange trees, the Valley also exported William Saroyan and Audra McDonald.<\/div>\n
 <\/div>\n
A successful writer can live
\nanywhere, and I would like to return to California. No matter where I must be
\nuntil I achieve my goals, I will try to be a good virtual resident of the
