My Annual Rejection of Autism Awareness Day

Last updated on November 26, 2023

Time for my annual rejection of Autism Awareness Day and Month.

No thank you, we’re all overly “aware” of autism.

There are puzzle-piece car magnets and bumper stickers in the parking lot I use at the university. Local businesses have the “light it up blue” posters in their windows. Local radio and television air public service announcements every hour.

Enough.

It’s a month of promoting Autism Speaks, an organization I don’t support and neither do many autistic self-advocates.

Tonight, I’m not going to link to the past posts or to any of the 100s of stories appearing online today.

It’s an exhausting month. I will let someone else engage in the arguments.
