things you might want to read

This page lists various resources I have utilized in developing my Web site on existentialism. Many of the books are difficult to find, especially in the United States. Still, major universities and large libraries should be able to locate and share these valuable works.

I suggest any books by Walter Kaufmann. If you must read “simplified” overviews, then the Totem Books “Introducing” series, and most of the Writers & Readers “…for Beginners” titles are better than most. Still, small little pocket guides are not going to be more than superficial overviews.

Do not use this site as a study guide. The incomplete nature of this Web site might result in misunderstanding the profiled individuals. The pages are sometimes posted unedited or appear in outline form. These documents contain excerpts from the works of others. Read their books.

A general history of philosophy, there are good chapters on Hegel, Marx, and Sartre. While specific works are not analyzed, the basic themes of philosophers are discussed with clarity.

T. Z. Lavine prepared From Socrates to Sartre as a companion text for a Public Broadcasting System television series. I have not seen this series, but it is something I plan to seek.

A Cliffs Notes-style book, it offers very little for the serious reader, but is excellent for the first-year student or one forced to take a philosophy class. Hegel is dealt with in detail, but few others receive such attention.

William S. Sahakian completed his graduate studies in philosophy at Harvard and at Boston University, receiving a Ph.D. in 1951. Sahakian was a professor of philosophy at Suffolk University.

Existential Philosophy

One thing about books on existentialism: many carry the title “Existentialism.” This makes locating a specific work a challenge unless you know the author, publisher, and year of the work. I own at least four books with this title and I have located more than a dozen online and in stores.

A difficult book to locate, but a must-have for any serious student of philosophy. I found it with the help of a used bookstore.

Walter Kaufmann was a professor of philosophy at Princeton from 1947 until 1980. He received his Ph.D. from Harvard in 1947. As a visiting professor, Kaufmann taught at Columbia, Cornell, Heidelberg, Jerusalem, and Australian National University. Kaufmann dedicated much of his work to existentialism. Kaufmann met with Jaspers and Heidegger, as well as other major philosophers. Heidegger's letters to Kaufmann answer many questions about Heidegger personally, as well as his philosophy.

I located this book at a Borders Books, in Fresno, Calif., by accident. This incident proves that bookstores are still essential. It is an excellent introductory text, but readers must be familiar with the basic philosophical concepts discussed, such as Hegel's works.
