Saving Misty
When Scott first moved to Pennsylvania, he found a PetSmart store near the university where he was going to be teaching. In the adoption area, there were many energetic and bouncy kittens. In a corner cage, which didn’t face out towards the public, was Misty. Scott checked on her every visit, hoping she’d find a nice home.
Misty was still in the adoption area after J.C. Kitty passed away. Scott checked on her but told himself we couldn’t deal with a new kitty, new job, and moving.
When Scott went to the store for some Feliway to help Pumpkin Kitty, he noticed an employee was removing Misty’s name tag from the cage. Scott asked if she had found a new home. “No. She’s been with us for as long as the Humane Society allows.” We have no idea what the Humane Society would do next. Scott worried might have been the end for Misty unless… well, unless we saved her! (PetSmart tries to relocate cats, with a no-kill policy whenever possible.)

Right there, Scott called Susan and said he was adopting Misty Kitty. It was the best “impulse purchase” he has ever made.

Arrival and Happy Dance
When Misty arrived, she hid in a small closet in the front bathroom, but only for a couple of days. Soon, she couldn’t contain her happiness. She would circle Scott and climb across his lap, unable to sit still long. She purred constantly. She was thrilled to have a new home.
Little Wiggle
Misty is our Little Wiggle. She has a curious walk that makes her butt wiggle.
Though they could never replace “The Girls” we loved, we have noticed that Misty and Lucy resemble Mimi and Jordan. Misty is similar to Mimi, sharing a willingness to be held and cuddled. Misty loves receiving attention.
Changes in Habits
In late August 2023, Misty started getting pickier about foods. By mid-September, we were offering her little buffets of wet food, hoping she’d eat a little every few hours. Her weight fell quickly.
