President Donald Trump has repeatedly threatened to declare a national emergency at the southern border of the United States. This strikes me as abusrd. How much of an emergency can something be that has been going on for decades? Illegal immigration isn’t new and it hasn’t seriously spiked in the last two years.
Curiosity led me to wonder how many “emergencies” presidents have declared, and how many were actual emergencies.
Thanks to ABC News, I now know there have been a lot of non-emergency national emergencies.

According to the Federal Register, 58 national emergencies have been declared since the National Emergency Act of 1976 was signed into law by President Gerald Ford.
And 31 have been annually renewed and are currently still in effect, as listed in the Federal Register.
