Being True to the Autistic You
“Successful” autistics spend a lot of time and energy masking, trying to fit in with neurotypical classmates, colleagues, and others in our lives. But, guess what? So do the “unsuccessful” autistics! Most of us are exhausted by this impulse to hide our autistic traits, anticipating rejection. We expect problems in school and at work. If others would listen to our needs and compromise with us, we could be our authentic selves more often.
