Kristen Fowler on Fragile X and Parenting

Kirsten Fowler is the author of Family, Faith, and Fragile X: The Raw Story of a Mother With Three Special Needs Children. She resides in Utah with her husband and four children, three of which have Fragile X Syndrome.

She loves music, art, theater, and occasional adventures. Amidst her challenges she tries to laugh rather than cry, have a good sense of humor, and share her experiences to help others find hope and joy.

Kirsten Fowler has had a love for writing since a young girl and always kept a journal for expression, therapeutic value, and family history. Throughout high school and college she wrote and designed for several newspapers. She currently lives in a small town in Utah with her husband, Jeremy, her four children, Millie, Isaac, Eliza, and Evelyn as well as their dog, Luna. She is a jack of all trades, master of none. Kirsten dabbles in music, including singing, guitar, ukulele, fiddle, and, of course, the recorder. She also likes to draw and paint, whether on canvas or furniture. Dancing is a love of hers, but now simply enjoys waltzing around the kitchen with her husband or jamming out to tunes with her kids. When she really takes the time, she will even do needle work, and when she is feeling adventurous, she loves indoor rock climbing. Otherwise, she is cleaning, cooking homemade meals, chasing her kids, serving in the community, and keeping in touch with family and friends the best she can.

As science advances, researchers continue identifying genetic and neurological markers for the traits associated with the autism spectrum. Mental health researchers continue to debate whether physical causes can or should be included within autism diagnoses. Some argue that once a biological marker has been identified, the diagnosis becomes a medical condition. The American Psychiatric Association historically has removed medical diagnoses from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders.

It is unfortunate that our healthcare system continues to arbitrarily separate mind and body. Supporting Neurodiversity requires that we care for the mind and body, embracing a holistic approach to wellbeing.
