Moving Stinks for Everyone

Last updated on November 26, 2023

Moving isn’t easy for anyone. It is one of the most stressful life events we experience, yet people move several times during their lives. We know that moving depends on many factors, and some of those are also stressful.

We move to…

  • Pursue our career goals.
  • Remain employed when transferred.
  • Attend a college, university, or trade school.
  • Help family and friends in need.
  • Downsize later in life.

Moving is chaotic, even with professional movers — and the cost of professional assistance is yet more stress!

My wife and I have a house in Western PA that needs to sell quickly so we don’t have two mortgage payments. I’m starting a new career path and she’s already telecommuting from a nearly-empty house / echo chamber.

Our children need new doctors, dentists, and they must be enrolled in new schools. Children come with a long to-do list anyway, but it gets longer and more pressing following a move. When you move, you have to do everything quickly that you had done over months or years.

Don’t forget the need to change address information, obtain new driver’s licenses, and to register cars.

Once the moving van finally arrives, there will be more chaos as we try to arrange furniture and place are belongings in some semblance of order.

Everything about moving triggers a normal person. Add in my constant anxiety and two children with their own special needs.

Hopefully, this is the last move until we’re ready to retire and downsize. I’d like to just stay put, now.
